Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
The best of the mentors the Lord has given me have had some things in common, whether they were full time Christian workers or full time Christians in secular work. They were all good followers before they became good leaders. They were all humble before the Lord. They were all worshipful of Him. They all prayed often. They all studied the Bible. The Bible made a great difference in all of their lives. They were all soul winners. After years of fruitful leadership, they were STILL good followers of Jesus Christ and other Christian leaders. 1 Corinthians 11:1: Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.I believe it was General Douglas MacArthur who said one must be a good follower before he can be a good leader. He was right. I understand he was a Christian. Christians need to be good followers of God before they can be good leaders of men. If you are following God don*t be afraid to be a leader and don*t be surprised if Christians follow you. If people follow you who are unbiblical Christians, be careful. If people follow you who are not Christians, be even more careful. You should be able to tell something about how well you are following Christ by who is following you. Matthew 4:19: And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
One characteristic of Christian leaders we should follow is that they will try to lead others to Christ. I have heard more than one Pastor say that his job was not to win souls but to teach others to win souls. Hogwash. If he isn*t trying to win souls how will he know how to teach others. The pastor of one church I visited admitted that he had never led anyone to Christ. I pray that the Lord either taught him to share the gospel or got him out of the ministry quickly. The church was a fraction of what it had been when I visited there some years earlier. I once served on a pulpit committee of a church. The pulpit committee consisted of far fewer individuals who had ever shared the gospel than the individuals who hadn*t. A minority of the Elders that selected the members of that pulpit committee had never shared the gospel with anyone either. No wonder they called a luke-warm pastor. Proverbs 11:30: The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.I have known very few soul-winners who were unwise. The problem of those few may have been that they were not good followers first. |
